5/ Wildlife

Wild ungulates :

Chamois, red deer and roe deer emerge from the forest in the early morning and at nightfall to feed on the alpine meadows.

They cohabit easily with livestock. To avoid the risk of transmitting diseases to wild animals, the cattle’s vaccinations are checked before they go up to the mountain pastures. In some places, wild animals have acted as a reservoir for disease (tuberculosis in particular) and must be eliminated to protect the rest of the wild and domestic population.

Small animals:

Marmots inhabit the scree slopes and emit a characteristic whistle when they see danger.

Hares, which turn white in winter, graze on the alpine vegetation and use it as a playground.

Voles aerate the ground with their galleries and are a favourite meal for birds of prey and foxes.

Birds:

Many birds inhabit the mountain pasture, both migratory and sedentary, but you’ll need to be discreet to observe them.

Birds of prey, on the other hand, are more likely to be seen:

Common buzzard (rounded tail), kite (notched tail), kestrel (capable of remaining motionless in flight above its prey), golden eagle, bearded vulture, vulture

Insects:

Numerous and indispensable, they will be presented to you during the workshop on the beehive.
