10/ Insects

Like the flora, the fauna in the Alps is rich in insect species.

From ants and dragonflies to snails and newts, the mountains hide a whole range of micro-fauna just waiting to be discovered.

When you think of mountain animals, the marmot immediately springs to mind, followed closely by cows, sheep and wolves. So, for a change from the clichés and to have plenty to talk about when you get back from your holidays, why not set off on a discovery of these discreet, organised little creatures that inhabit the mountains.

The vital role of bees.

Bees help to pollinate numerous plant species. Without them, many varieties of plants, flowers and fruit would be doomed to extinction. The bee needs the flower for its pollen, and the flower needs the bee for its fertilisation. Our mountains have become real refuges for them, sometimes seriously threatened as soon as the environment is disturbed.

On the Nyon plateau, there’s a workshop on the role of bees and explanatory panels on pollination.
